Summary

This collection includes two letters, November 4, 1870, and January 13, 1872, to Colonel. Johnston; the letter written in 1870 is about the Army of Northern Virginia, and the letter written in 1872 concerns a donation to the Lee monument. There is a letter dated July 19, 1878 from Johnston to Preston Johnston Beale. Also there is a reprint of a letter about the 'Life of Albert Sidney Johnston,' which Johnston wrote in memorial of his father. Lastly, there is a letter dated June 24, 1874 from Johnston to the Southern Collegian about the need for alumni gifts to keep Washington and Lee University's number of matriculates up while the South is impoverished. He also discusses other reasons the matriculation numbers are decreasing.
