Abstract

William Mahone, a major general in the Confederate Army widely known for his contributions at the Battle of Petersburg, responded to a letter from Lee written earlier that summer. It appears that Lee was in search of documents from the campaign of 1864. Mahone writes that he believes his records of the campaign are in the hands of "Federal Authority."
